Do I need a certified installer to install my fire door in New Zealand?

It’s not a legal or a mandatory requirement to have a certified installer for a fire door, however having a competent, registered builder with experience installing fire doors is highly recommended. Fire doors form an integral part of a buildings overall fire protection system, and proper installation is essential to ensure they function as intended during a fire.

Some key points to consider are:

  1. Building Code Compliance: Fire doors must meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. If you’re installing a fire door as part of a new building or renovation, the door must be installed in accordance with these regulations & meet any council inspection requirements.
  2. Manufacturer’s Instructions: Fire door installation methods are specific to each door manufacturer, therefore installation instructions supplied by the manufacturer must be followed closely. Failure to follow installation instructions could prevent the door from being signed off as compliant by the council and the manufacturer and void the effectiveness of the door in the event of a fire.
  3. Certified Installers: While not mandatory, installers with experience and expertise in fire door installation are recommended. They are trained to ensure the door is properly fitted, gaps, clearances and tolerances between components are correct, the fire protection sealant is compliant and applied correctly, and the door is fitted with compliant hardware.
  4. Sign Off: Once a fire door has been installed, the installer must complete an “installers declaration” to confirm all instructions and installation methods have been followed correctly and compliant hardware has been fitted to the door. Photographic evidence of critical steps during installation will sometimes be required as proof that the installation methodology has been followed correctly.

If unsure about the installation requirements for your fire door, consult your door supplier or check with your local council or building authority. They can provide guidance on what will be required for your specific location & situation to ensure your fire door is compliant and ready for action!
