What are HPL facings and how do they work?

So, what is HPL facing & how does it work?

HPL stands for High Pressure Laminate and is a durable, cost-effective material created by pressing multiple layers of kraft paper, soaked in resin, under high heat and pressure. The top layer typically features a decorative surface—such as a woodgrain, solid colour, or textured finish. These layers result in a durable hard-wearing product that is typically 0.7 – 1.2mm thick.

Some advantages of using HPL as your door surfaces include:

  • Durability – HPL surfaces are extremely tough and and resistant to scratches, dents, abrasions and general wear and tear meaning they maintain their appearance even with frequent use.
  • Cost effective – Using HPL facings saves time and money compared to a natural timber veneer surface in the fact that your door arrives as a finished product meaning there is no painting or finishing required on site.
  • Low Maintenance – Doors finished with HPL are easy to clean and maintain because of their non-porous, sealed surfaces. This means they retain their appearance and durability and won’t degrade even with frequent cleaning making them ideal for hygiene sensitive areas.
  • Design Flexibility – HPL faced doors come in a wide variety of colours, finishes and textures making it easy to match different interior styles and design schemes.

HPL is a great hard-wearing product that can be used in a wide variety of applications and is an ideal choice for “high traffic” areas where doors are in constant use such as rest homes, hospitals, schools and public buildings etc.
