What are the best wall systems to install my fire doors into?

It’s a common challenge—and not always one a technical consultant can resolve on the spot. There is no such thing as a “best wall system” although Soteria Doors have tested in a variety of different wall systems.

Soteria has several standard wall types that fire door systems can be installed into. Custom wall types seem to be becoming more prevalent and require a specialized solution, requiring a 3rd party fire engineer. Engaging a fire engineer can result in a slightly longer response time. When working through the detail of your design, ensure you allow sufficient time to liaise with manufacturers.

It begs the question “How can I ensure I don’t run into any issues with fire doors and wall types?”. Early design engagement with the fire door manufacturer – preferably during the developed design phase. This ensures you get a solution that meets your compliance and aesthetic requirements. Engaging early allows the manufacturer to understand your design intent and suggest design options. Our team can provide technical advice, involve a third-party fire engineer, or arrange fire testing when a bespoke solution is needed.

What issues can arise if a fire door manufacturer isn’t involved early in the design process? We’ve encountered cases where walls were already built on site before we were consulted, making it difficult—or even impossible—to provide a compliant fire door solution. Early involvement helps ensure that both the wall and door systems align with certification requirements.  There is not always a compliant solution available which can result in a costly remedial onsite.

“What if I have two different wall types in the opening?” In most cases, a third-party fire engineer will need to assess the situation and recommend a compliant wall system.

So, what walls can my fire doors be installed into?
That depends on the fire rating and the specific wall systems approved for use with the fire door. Always refer to the door’s certification and installation guidelines.

Soteria’s Fire Doors can be installed into Korok, cross laminated timber, steel stud, timber stud and masonry walls. Each wall system comes with specific installation requirements that you need to follow — these are available in the Resource Centre. All Fire Door products also require a minimum wall specification. Make sure to review the specification sheet during the design phase to ensure compliance.
